Copyright Your Beats

Copyright Your Beats

Producers copyright every one of your instrumentals before you even let anyone hear them. When you get in the habit of copyrighting all of your work you will always have some since of security knowing that your instrumentals are protected by the United States Copyright Office. That is one less thing you have to think about while you are focusing on being creative.

Simply put, copyrighting your music is to easy and non expensive to not do. For 55 dollars you can use the electronic Copyright Office (eCO) to upload up to 170mb of beats in a .zip file (128kbps/.mp3).

There are a lot of sites that have a copyright service but the only way to go as far as i am concerned is through the United Sates Copyright Office. But you are not done after that, read my article on tagging your beats.

After you copyright your beats. You need a good contract/agreement for your beats check out mine here.

Producers Stop Giving Away Free Beats

Giving away free products or services can be a great way to generate awareness or interest to your business. But the key is to recognize if its truly helping or hurting your bottom line. Anyone can clearly see that selling beats has become oversaturated with great and terrible producers. Don't let the steep competition influence you to give away your hard work. A internet flooded with free beats just depreciates the value of a instrumental and is taking money out of all of our pockets. A person who is willing to invest in themselves is far more likely to give you producer credits, make videos and purchase tracks from you multiple times.

It is unfortunate but i have heard so many stories from producers about them sending there beats to peoples email then later on hearing there beats in productions without being paid a dime and not even getting any credit for making the beat. Also tag your beats. Read my article on tagging your beats here.

There is a endless amount of information for promoting and marketing anything on or off the internet. Google keywords like: viral marketing, email marketing, social media marketing and network marketing.

Artists, Stop Giving Away Your Hard Work

I just wrote a article about giving away free beats, giving away free songs is like giving away free beats to the 5th power. I sometimes wonder what do artists really want, money or attention. Before this post turns into a rant consider a basic contract for a new artist. The advance that a artist gets from a major record label is for the production of a album. So basically it's a loan from a bank with a 90% interest rate. If the album doesn't sell you can actually owe the record company money. Before the artist gets anything from record sales the record company and label has to get paid. And add on more people if you came into the company under another artist.

These days record companies want you to already have a fan base and a brand before they even consider singing you. Having a fan base and a established brand is basically all it takes to generate revenue. Sure being signed to a record label can make you famous but fame and popularity doesn' t always equals money. So what is the difference between you and a signed artists? It's definitely not talent or productions. It's the fact that they already have a network to send you through to see if you are excepted by the buying public. It's the mystique of being a signed artist. Every single thing they do for you will have to be paid by you with interest added. Promoting a album by giving a few tracks to dj's, internet radio stations, etc. make since. But flooding the internet with unprofessional sounding music with hopes of being discovered is like playing a 100 million dollar lottery.

There is a endless amount of information for promoting and marketing anything on or off the internet. Google keywords like: viral marketing, email marketing, social media marketing and network marketing. This is the age of do it yourself, be your own boss.

Tag Your Beats

Tag Your Beats

If your goal is to make money with your beats tagging them should be a obvious thing to do. If you are just a hobbyist giving away free beats to see if some one likes it enough to record on it just so it can make you feel good , kill yourself! LOL. Just kidding. But damn respect the game. That's like being on the block giving away free product to some one that would normally spend money. Sure, you make beats for artists, you got a 9 to 5 and you are just making beats for fun so you are not pressed about making no money off beats. Great so pat yourself on your back because you are just making it harder for producers who are.

If you are trying to make money off of your beats and you have those same beats untagged on the net i assure you that someone has your beats loaded up in there program and is recording vocals to them as you read this article. Or even worst, they have them on a cd and is selling them hand to hand to people in there city. Believe me i have been in studios while people were downloading your beats and not even remembering where they downloaded the beats from. So please tag your beats not for me but for the whole beat selling game.
